Is luxury vinyl flooring waterproof?
At Hawkins Flooring Warehouse, we get this question a lot. We can say that, yes, LVF is waterproof with absolute confidence. Let’s get into detail below.
Construction
LVF is made in layers. The lowest layer, the backing, is waterproof and prevents mold and mildew from growing. The core layer, next, is made of PVC vinyl. This is a standard construction material that is entirely waterproof. In addition, it resists water no matter how long you expose it. The core layer, depending on the format, luxury vinyl tile or luxury vinyl plank, will have a wood plastic composite layer or a plastic tile composite layer. Next comes the imaging layer, which has a depth to it. This prevents gouges and nicks from showing. Then, finally, is the top layer, a melamine coating that resists scuffs, gouges, and scratches.
Format
Luxury vinyl comes in two formats: luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and luxury vinyl tile (LVT). LVT comes in firm, groutable squares. LVP comes in a strip the length of a wood plank that is very flexible and molds nicely to the subfloor.
Appearance
LVP can take on the appearance of any wood species you desire. Cherry? Walnut? Oak? Hickory? LVP can deliver these species with incredible detail in the image.
On the other hand, LVT can provide stone, tile, or brickwork of any image. It can even have a texture to it. Furthermore, the imaging is so accurate that you will think you are looking at the real thing when you first see it.
